Netflix inspires goal setting for Point Park student

13 Feb

by Bernard-Charles

It was a lovely weekend to just be lazy. But I did have some minor homework to consider like memorizing a monologue, but I simply was in the mood to soak up inspiration rather than make any moves.

I watched a good portion of Netflix to pass the time. Films included: From Prada to Nada (2011), Waiting Forever (2010), Helvetica (2007), The Answer Man (2009), A Month by the Lake (1995), and Making the Boys (2009).

Making the Boys was probably the most heartfelt film that I watched this past weekend because it talks about a perspective of gay culture that I have been expressing for a while. Today’s gay children do not take much gratitude in the events that lead to today’s freedom of expression. For example, The Stonewall Riots in 1969 and the influence of The Boys in the Band. It’s sad that not enough people seem to show interest in the liberation movement. Those that do, I respect. As a result of the film it sparked an inclination to revive an interest in supporting the movement. How can I help with the solidarity? Well, I am writing this blog post to start.

The understanding of play-writing and the little history recap of the gay rights movement did motivate me to contemplate on what I should be doing to progress as America’s Future Talk Show Host. Ellen DeGeneres has been an inspiration to plant the seed in my mind, but the ground is so tough to plow that I am having an arduous workout trying to get my name out there, impressing people to rely on my abilities, and learning the ropes of journalism and media as a whole.

I have come to a conclusion that trying to understand how media and social media works today is good, but I cannot strive on that alone. I need real world insight. How do I do this? Well it first comes to writing down my affirmations and goals for this career.

Being realistic with oneself is a task in itself, but is absolutely needed. Especially with a career goal that I have. “Being famous” may come across as the ultimate goal of my dream, but  I am telling you that it is so much more for me. I want to achieve this dream for my family. I just use fame as an umbrella term to capture the energy of my dream.  I grew up poor and I’d like to step far away from that because I know I can. I have the freedom to do so, but for those who cannot, I’d like to use my resources to help them. As well as aspire to be a walking representative of the low-income families that did not meet the karmic levels to proceed with their hopes and dreams.

Philanthropy is something I learned by attending the Milton Hershey School.

Another theme in my aspiration is to teach. I always admired teachers and their ways to communicate ideas and opinions so fluidly. Those are the people that should be the ones idolized. They are indeed the wise folk in the tribes, yet have fallen short in the modern society. Their competitors are the media and celebrities. It would be nice to be able to offer knowledge and teach people values.

In all of this, I guess I have soaked up different concrete things that I would like to accomplish during my life. A bucket list if you will for this future talk show host.

  1. Write a book
  2. Talk to already established hosts and shows
  3. Act in movies/commercials
  4. Speak at schools
  5. Guest appearances
  6. Community Service: Paint a building wall
  7. Host award shows
  8. Continue blog writing
  9. Invest in the Illuminati (haha)
  10. YouTube Show

These all are bricks completing my castle in the air.

So I have currently used social media to spread the word about my quest and am sitting until someone can show enough belief in me to  help me out. Allies are probably the most important tool to have in your dream satchel. They are people who can share compassion and strength for you and your visions. Picking these people wisely and nurturing the seeds that you both plant for each other is essential to success.

I made this photo to resemble the changes that are coming with each new spring.

I have marvelous mentors in my life to help guide me in the direction of my dream. But I will be graduating very soon. Potentially next semester, so I am starting to feel the pressure of needing a job lined up upon graduation. I feel like my work ethic and devotion to my dream should surely prove my competence for any establishment but I cannot simply rely on that alone.

If my allies could seek out ways they can help me would be helpful and appreciated. I am not someone to come out face-to-face to talk about these concerns, because I am humble and respectful. I don’t want to come across as taking advantage of my elders. I will let divine timing take its course and let my allies know that  I am seeking out assistance and wisdom from them with this post . I am certainly not going to let anyone’s help slip away unnoticed.

I just want to encourage you and others to have a little faith in people.

My Netflix viewing was much more than filling my time with entertainment this past weekend. It allowed me to strengthen my insight on my life and decide what I can do to make my dream a step closer to completed.

O’Donnell Engagement shows real Rosie and a cup of Joe

It was announced today that Rosie O’Donnell and her girlfriend Michelle Rounds will be getting married. According to Entertainment Weekly, a date has not yet been decided. In other news, the social media reaction to such an announcement has been barren.

I looked at Entertainment Weekly’s tweets and Facebook likes and did not see much going on. So I proceeded to The Huffington Post and was mildly impressed by the turn out with only about 20 tweets and 1 Facebook response sharing the news. Just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything internationally, I went to Daily Mail, a United Kingdom news site and sure enough the announcement was published, but with only six comments at the time and no social media shares.  So what is up with this newly acclaimed OWN talk show host

The answer lies within The Huffington Post’s interview with O’Donnell, they asked

Did you feel more confined as the “Queen of Nice” or “Hotheaded Rosie”?

I think probably Queen of Nice. I remember performing at Caesar’s Palace at the beginning of my show and literally halfway through my hour of stand-up I could hear people getting up and leaving, saying, “She’s not that lady from TV.” People buy into you as one image; they pigeonhole you for the narrative in their brain, who you represent in the culture or to them. Often that doesn’t have to do with who you are as a human being.

O’Donnell in her answer reveals the true nature of why social media hasn’t been sharing her story. She basically has been painted a certain way and people judge her on those already established notions. O’Donnell continued to share with Huffington her 1992 role in A League of Their Own,

I think I was kind of fortunate that my first real brush with fame was playing Madonna’s best friend in “A League of Their Own” — to go out for dinner with Madonna and see what kind of reaction she elicited in people. Fans sleeping outside her apartment or people coming up to her and telling her they liked her better blonde or she didn’t look as hot as they thought she would … I remember saying to her, “How can you live like this?” It helped me understand how crazy it can become.

Most would agree that her outbreaks on The View caused people to think negatively of her character and probably moved fans to ignore her image altogether. However I believe she is just as talented as Ellen DeGeneres, whose social media effect about her engagement with Portia de Rossi was much more viral. It is fascinating that we have two well-known lesbians, who normally cannot marry in most states, have talk show careers, and yet there seems to be a varying affect on the community.

This makes me question if the real Rosie O’Donnell is truly owning her life and if her career and persona are merely just two sugar cubes in a cup of Joe.

People.com reports that Rosie O’Donnell met Michelle Rounds at a Starbucks this past summer.

Virtual Yule Parties and Wishes

3 Dec

Hey everyone! Thanksgiving seems like it is long gone and now we can adjust our scopes to the Yule season. I would like to share with you that I am participating in 2 Blog Parties: Astraea Sapphire’s Almanac- Yuletide Blessings and The Village Witch- Yule Magic. They are on the right hand side of the blog. If you have a blog and love the mystical season of winter then I encourage you to sign up by clicking on the badges ( yes the fancy artsy images under my handsome face). Wait! You do not know what blog parties are? Well, heavens! We shall fix that.

A blog party is simply a blogger’s delight to encourage fellow bloggers and internet users to become acquainted with other blogger’s work by hosting a virtual party, commonly with a specific theme or purpose! A blog party usually consists of having a post announcing/inviting people to join the party, a blog party badge that redirects the internet user back to the host’s blog (some are simple and some rather creative), and finally a way for people to blog hop (yeah, kinda like bar hopping). On my other blog, I participated with Witch-Blog’s blog party called The Real Witches of Halloween. Witch-Blog hosted the party for the whole month of October. Depending on the duration, you can make an individual post for each day telling your readers to go to the participating blogger’s site. Or you can set up one master list and on a specific day, bloggers and internet users may click on the various blog participants and start soberly blog hopping.

Being a participant is pretty simple. In order to join a blog party, you usually take the host’s badge provided and post it to your own blog. From there you can comment back on the host’s page and tell them you wanted to join. After that you can start your post for the blog party. Depending on what the host wants will determine what your post should be about. I can assure you that blog party hosts have all the details needed in their initial blog party post. So it isn’t too scary.

I think it is a cute way for bloggers to get traffic, comments, readership, and establish networking among people who have similar interests and tastes. So, I have my blog posts all scheduled for the blog parties! So come back and check it out!

Also I am pleased to share with you that I have finished my Christmas wish list and it is online for you to see what sort of interests I have. I enjoy creating Christmas wish lists because it helps me tailor and see what my own interests are and I can see a personality in it.
